DC Fire and EMS first reported the fire in the 4100 block of Cathedral Avenue NW just after 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 10.
Upon arrival, the department said the fire was in the walls of a the Cathedral West Condominiums. Crews got to work opening the walls and checking the extent of the fire’s spread.
While doing so, heavy smoke permeated several floors of the building. That’s when the fire was upgraded to a second-alarm fire and additional units from neighboring counties were called to the scene.
Altogether, the 100 crew members were on scene and the fire spread to about 20 units. The building was evacuated and one officer was said to have sustained minor injuries.
DC EMS said they will assess the building for safety before determining when residents can go back in. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The department took to Twitter to thank the other departments who helped them in their endeavor
